“Diet is a four letter word.”

by hungryyogini on March 13, 2009

Yesterday morning I was watching the Today Show when Bethenny Frankel came on. She was talking about her new book and a little bit about her food philosophy. I just love that her philosophy is really about “rejecting the diet mentality” and just living and eating, or in her words, “eating, drinking and being merry!” She said so boldly that “Diet is a four letter word” and I just loved that!

All of this yoga gets me thinking about body image. Since I have begun practicing, I have learned to trust my body and appreciate it. Just yesterday I was talking with Ashley about how it’s so easy to get wrapped up in the negative self talk. She said when she was studying with Shiva Rea, she learned that the most beautiful gift she had was her body. She could move it and dance with it and express herself through movement. It’s so true…We can move and dance and love with our bodies. Why wouldn’t we be thankful for that!? So I encourage you today, to find something you love about your body and really appreciate it, honor it. Maybe you are feeling tired and don’t want to do that vigorous workout…that’s ok! Experience it and honor it! Maybe you are feeling happy and excited and just want to move or dance. Do it!! Your body will thank you.

This morning, I honored my body by taking it slow in yoga. It was a really invigorating class but my body was feeling a little tired and stiff so I took it slow, much slower than the others in the class. But that’s okay, because my practice isn’t about them. It’s about me.

Alright, alright…back to the topic of this here bloggie…food! This morning before I left I had a mini breakfast. Some Kashi Cinnamon Harvest with unsweetened vanilla hempmilk and raw agave, a spoon of Maple Cinnamon Almond Butter, and half a Key Lime Pie Larabar (LOVE!).

When I got home, I just wanted to be snacky since I may have lunch plans…I’m workin’ out the details right now and didn’t want to have a big meal and spoil my appetite! I munched on a LARGE carrot.

I’m currently sipping on some hot coffee and eating some dark chocolate. It’s too good to interrupt the experience with a picture =)

Have a wonderful Friday!

What will you do today to honor your body?

I like your thoughts on body image! Of course I struggle with it like many others, but I am definitely coming around to an appreciation of what it does for me. I wish my boyfriend was reading this post with me! He has made amazing strides towards making over his eating habits but is now way too intense (IMHO) on the health quest. He needs to learn to love himself as much as I love him!

Today I’m going to honor my body by eating when I’m hungry and stopping when I’m full. Happy Friday! :)

Wonderful!!

Today I will adequately fuel myself, as I do every single day :-)

I am working on allowing myself the eat when I am hungry and stop all of the crazy self hate talk that happens in my head.

I will let myself rest after a very long first half of the semester and good workouts this week :)

What an amazing post. Hopefully, in the future I can have the same type of mentality that diet is a four letter word. Crazy thoughts of dieting and eating run through my head way too often, but I am working on this so that is really all that I can do. Most of the time I don’t listen to these thoughts but every so often they take over. Do you ever have any thoughts like this? If so, how do you reject them?

I need to work on honoring my body. I need to listen what my body needs instead of telling it what it needs.

I love this post!
I was exhausted today after work, and I have to work tonight at the restaurant (which means a 14 hour work day!), so I knew that working out would just make me even more tired. I decided to relax after work, play around on the computer and spend time with my fiancé. I already feel much better for it!!

Enjoy your Friday!

I read an article with Bethany Frankel in Health Magazine and just loved her philosophy. Honor your body is right! Oh, and I have the same larabar in my purse right now saved for later. :)

I just bought her book! Can’t wait to read it because I too have issues with body image. I always think my tummy is too big no matter what! I need to work on that!

Thank you for this post! It’s so refreshing and uplifting. Today I have honored my body with a great workout, and will honor it with healthy foods. Yesterday I was kinda mean to my body. Whoops.

Courtney,
Awesome post my friend. I love what you wrote about honoring and loving our bodies. Today I love my body because it is getting so much stronger and more flexible in yoga. It amazes me more and more everyday. The body is truly a gift, no?

I have yet to try the Key Lime Pie Larabar, but you totally reminded me of a raw key lime pie recipe I’ve been wanting to try. Now, I don’t know if it will be as good as that vegan pie you had yesterday at lunch, but I’ll do my best. :)

Have a wonderful weekend my friend!

this is such a sweet post. Honoring your body is the one of the best thing a woman can do for herself. With societal pressures to be thin, we all need to just take a breather and tell ourselves that those pictures on those magazines are not real and that the life of celebrities and models surrounds dieting and extreme amounts of exercise.

Her philosophy sort of fits mine. I hate dieting. It is pointless and horrible for the body. When I see people dieting or mention that they’re on a diet, i feel for them because I know that they’re going through tough times and lots of body image issues.

Courtney, you rock :) I love this post and definitely agree that it is so necessary to honor yourself. I’m not perfect in this area, but I definitely strive to do so every day. Thanks for giving me even more motivation! I love Bethenny Frankel, too.

I just got caught up on your posts – sounds like lunch with Jenna was awesome! I’m also loving all the oat creations!!

Hello Courtney:

I loved your post today! I am in the final weeks of my yoga teacher training program and feeling a bit overwhelmed, but after reading your post I realize that I need to honer my body and the wisdom that I have learned from this journey and most of all enjoy it! Thank you so much!

I saw that same segment on the Today Show. I don’t normally go for fad diet books, etc., but she seemed to make a lot of sense!
