Today’s session was long and exhausting but very informative. I LOVED the whole talk about nutrition. I forgot my info sheet at home but the main thing we talked about was honoring your body, feeding it what it needs and what works for it. We talked about how important it is to eat simple, organic food closest to it’s natural state and how important your eating environment and mentality is. You really are what you eat! If you eat in an angry, or heightened state, or in a chaotic, distracting environment you aren’t going to be able to digest as well. Makes sense, huh?
We also discussed the importance of fat in your diet. It is so important to eat doses of healthy fat like nuts, healthy oils and avocado. And not just occasionally! They are very good for our body and our satiety. She emphasized organic and we also discussed how expensive it was. But here’s the thing. It’s either pay now by purchasing healthy organic food, or pay later with frequent doctor’s visits and medication. I liked that. A fellow student explained it like so: “Say you have a super nice, expensive car like a BMW. You would pay the extra money to put premium fuel in the tank wouldn’t you? Exactly, you wouldn’t go junking it up with low grade fuel.” You are the BMW, my friends!
Post-discussion we worked on some more adjustments, discussed injuries and diseases that might affect a student’s practice and the approach we need to take with them, and ended with a very long arm-balance session. We worked on alignment in headstand, forearm balance, and handstand. We must have been upside down for a good hour.
I finally got home around 7:15pm and went straight for the fruit drawer in the fridge. I munched on some grapes, then got preparing a salad for dinner. Organic mixed greens with avocado, cucumber, chopped apple, carrots and leftover crispy chicken from yesterday.
It hit the spot for sure.
Today was a very physical day. I am quite exhausted and am already feeling the signs of a sore body but it’s a good kind of sore. Tomorrow we don’t start until 8:30am which means a good night’s sleep for this tired body! Night!

I always use the car-fuel metaphor when I explain my healthy eating philosophy. So true!
Hope you get some good rest tonight!! :)
Yep, I’m living proof that you are what you eat :-)
What a great session! I can totally relate to what your class was discussing… I feel so empowered when I fuel myself with the best possible foods I can. We are in control of our bodies and that is such a huge responsibility!
Another delicious dinner! Glad to see that you are practicing what you preach ;)
I like how you put it-”You are the BMW”. That is totally right! Nice topic to discuss! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you had a nice day. What do you think the benefits of being upside down are?
Love the metaphor too. I’m glad I’ve gotten over my fat-phobia and can focus on eating good foods of all types (except avocado…I hate it).
beautiful salad!! love the addition of avocado, apple………and CRISPY CHICKEN OF COURSE!
That’s so true about the expensive-groceries-guilt! I realized that a couple months back and just started buying whatever food I wanted, even if it was a little more pricey. A Michelle with delicious, nutritious food is worth the extra money!
Hey, do you have any data on organics being better than non-organics? I mean, I’m into organic stuff just cuz I don’t wanna eat pesticides, but I’ve seen no realy science/data that presents results that organics are acutally healthier.
???
I love that!! And it’s so true, we really are what we eat!! I hear time and time again about how people feel SO much better when they are eating a significant amount of healthier foods, versus the greasy, un-satiating junk!! And I love healthy fats, (hello PEANUT BUTTER) so I’m glad we are aloud to have plenty of it! :)
Wow, my family is a total car-family. Mom, bro, Dad and I all drive pretty nice cars (even though our home computer is from 1999), and they all get that you can’t put low-grade gas in our cars. I’ve NEVER thought of my body and food in that way though. I LOVE the BMW analogy. It’s so true!
You always eat so healthfully and cleanly. I envy that :) Have a great Sunday!
do you almost laugh how 830a can seem LATE?
glad it was a fun day.
Im off to “be” some oatmeal.
Miz.
So true that you are what you eat, and I definitely only want to be the good stuff. :) I feel like we all so often get caught up in the word “fat” because it has such a negative connotation, but there are so many great benefits that we get from those healthy fats you were talking about…I could eat almonds and walnuts and pecans, etc, all day!
Lovely message in today’s post. I remember when I wasn’t getting enough fats in my diet…my hair fell out, my nails were peeling, and my skin was dry and itchy. Now that I’ve upped the fat grams, I’m happier, I look much healthier, and I have so much more energy.
I like to refer to the ‘Dirty Dozen’ when buying organic foods. That way I’m not buying the most contaminated veggies and fruits, and I’m also saving money.
I love the BMW metaphor! It’s SO true!! I know I always feel much better when I’ve had ample amounts of veggies, water, and natural foods instead of packaged and processed!
Sounds like you are learning a lot of great info!
The things you discussed about nutrition are exactly the things I have been reading a lot about the past couple of years. Especially in one of the first books I ever read on the subject – Skinny Bitch by Kim Barnouin and Rory Freedman. The title might put you off but it’s a good book and it really changed my whole outlook on food and what I put in my body. The language in the book can be a little harsh and “dirty” but I thought it was kind of funny. Anyway, the book promotes (among other things) eating organic produce.
Thanks for this post. I have been eating “not so good” the past two days, and its good that I read this. It gave me motivation to put premium back in my tank! :)
When you said you were having nutrition talks at yoga last night, I got so excited for your recap post about it! What great perspectives and I am totally going to use the BMW analogy because, if anything, we should be treating out bodies even BETTER than we would a BMW!
Sounds like you’re learning so so much!
I really love these types of discussions! I was also listening to a book that talks about how your food was made and how that effects your body.. was it made with love then that energy is transfered, etc
I LOVE this post! I definitely try to follow the principle of “pay” now vs. “pay” later. My blog has a lot to do with budgeting and how preventative health and fitness such as eating organic and whole foods actually SAVE you money in the long run! I’d much rather eat $30 of fresh , local, organic veggies and fruits than pay $30 for my doctor’s co-pay! Nutrient dense food is always going to be more expensive, but it’s SO worth it! Thanks for your insights- they really hit home for me! :-D
Hi, nice post. I have been wondering about this topic,so thanks for writing. I’ll certainly be coming back to your blog.
