Yoga-fied

by hungryyogini on April 19, 2009

Wow. What a weekend. I’m officially exhausted but still happy that I am doing this program. I’m learning so much about yoga and myself. It’s really amazing!

Today we started at 8:30 with a flow class. But first, there were snacks. I woke up at 7:00 starving so my pre-yoga snack was a bit heavier. An apple with Maple Cinnamon Almond Butter and love boats…get it? Cuz it’s a date? Yah, I’ve got jokes…

Each time we practice, a few students are “adjusters” and walk around the room practicing their adjustments and assisting the other students in the poses. Well, it was my turn this morning so for the 90 minute class, I walked around helping my fellow teacher trainees. It was very fun, yet slightly intimidating to adjust someone when you don’t know what’s going on inside their body or how they are feeling. It was a great experience though.

After that, we had more discussion on illnesses and injuries and how you would tailor a practice towards someone with something going on in their body. The bottom line (and good news)…anyone can practice yoga! It may not be a strong vinyasa or power yoga practice, but anyone who can breathe can practice yoga!

We had an hour for lunch so I rushed home to make a Cherry Blueberry Smoothie with half of a Rudi’s Mini Cinnamon Raisin Bagel and Barney Butter.

We had to eat light because this afternoon we did a two hour Ashtanga class. Holy. Freakin. Cow. I am not an Ashtanga girl.  It kicked my hiney, especially after many many hours on the mat this weekend.

It’s so funny how everyone loves a certain type of yoga. A few of us were talking today how those who tend to be more strict or regimented with their schedules and lives (ahem, like me) love flow for it’s freedom and fluidity while others love Ashtanga for it’s structure and predictability. Pretty neat! It makes sense though and that is part of why we (or at least I) practice yoga! To bring that fluidity and freedom (or structure) to our lives!

I got home around 4:00pm quite ravenous and devoured an apple (and various other snacks) before you could say YOGA. Cooling fruit is the best post-yoga snack. Mom and I ran to Sports Authority to get a bike helmet so I could be super safe on the road. I was dreaming of dinner the whole time and couldn’t get cooking fast enough when we got home. I made the quickest thing I could think of…

I cooked some whole wheat angel hair pasta and added fresh basil, the zest and juice of one  lemon, EVOO, steamed broccoli (in the micro for a few minutes) and a little bit of grana padano cheese.

While all of that was cooking I seasoned some chicken with EVOO, balsamic vinegar, crushed red pepper flakes, garlic salt and pepper. I grilled it on the George and put it on top of the pasta.

It only took about 20 minutes to prepare thanks to the micro and the George. It was quite delish too. It was a bit dry so I added a little bit of balsamic vinegar to the final product and that did the trick. I haven’t had pasta in forever and this hit the spot, especially since it was my first real meal of the day.

My brain is overflowing with all sorts of yoga stuff at the moment. We learned A LOT this weekend! It wore me out for sure. I’m already in my PJ’s and am just going to relax and pull all of my things together to hit the road tomorrow. Only a week and a half (and two tests) away from Summer. YESSSSSS.

Love. Peace. Chicken Grease.

Glad your yoga weekend is going well. Love that PB/Bagel pic. Very clear.

So… you are officially my yoga genius! The modifications you recommended worked. I just needed to widen my arms and legs a bit more. They were both slightly in versus being in line with my shoulders and hips. Thanks for the tip! It was just what I needed to find the problem.
Also, that pasta dish looks A-MAZING! There is nothing like fresh basil, lemon zest, and balsamic vinegar.

I laughed hysterically at your date joke…hahaha

I haven’t done Ashtanga Yoga…er, at least I don’t think I have. It’s so true how certain people like certain types of yoga. I have yet to find my favorite one (because I haven’t tried them all), but I have realized that at times I like Hatha and other times I like Vinyasa. I guess for me it depends on my mood, time of day and soreness.

those dates look scrumptious! So does the Barney Butter. SOooO creamy….

Jessica,
It’s just vanilla soymilk, chocolate whey protein and frozen cherries and blueberries. Easy as pie! =)

What a wonderful yoga weekend! I am the exact same way… yoga provides me with an outlet to feel truly free and relaxed in my structured life. I am so glad I found yoga!

Now that’s an elegant dinner! I can’t believe you can make something so easy look so professional. Love it :D

That’s awesome that you are doing that yoga program! I’m sure you’ll make an awesome yoga teacher! I think I might start doing yoga this summer when I have more time. I’m not that flexible, but practice makes perfect! Someday I’ll finally be able to do the happy baby pose without rolling around like a rollie pollie :)

You eat so clean, girl! Power to ya. I need to get back on the wagon. Give me inspiration to do so! You already do. :) I also fell off the yoga wagon for awhile…some things are in order! Keep up your optimism – it’s refreshing.

WOw what kind of workshop was that? I just read the last couple of your posts and it sounds so interesting–and very informative and fun! (but hard work too!) I would love to do something like that!! :)

What a great weekend!
Out of curiosity have you noticed many changes in your body since starting all the yoga? You may have mentioned it already- sorry if I missed it!

Jaclyn,
It is the teacher training program I am doing through Yoga Alliance and the Asheville Yoga Center.

Yoga is the one place in my life that everything else falls away and I can just be free. Reading about your training inspires me so much!
