I have to admit that I was slightly sad when the Raw Wednesday Challenge was over! It was great to have a reason to try a new raw recipe every week. I think I needed the “deadline” of every Wednesday, ya know? Otherwise I would just keep saying “Oh, I’ll get to it.”
Well, I dubbed today "Raw Wednesday; The Sequel.” It’s been a rawesome day full of exciting new raw foods. I have this little machine to thank for that:
But I’m getting a little ahead of myself here.
It all started with breakfast. I woke up bright and early after a surprisingly wonderful night’s sleep over at S and K’s house. The doggies kept me warm and were wonderful companions. I’m gonna miss those little guys but am happy that they are home and happy with their Mom, Dad and new little sister.
Anyway. I went a little untraditional with breakfast.
One sliced mango with half of an avocado, fresh lemon juice (wanted lime but couldn’t find one!), and fresh mint from the backyard. This was the epitome of Summer. So light and refreshing and a very healthy start to the day. What I loved about this for breakfast is that it didn’t weigh me down. I was able to go for a walk and practice yoga without a problem about an hour later. A couple months ago the thought of anything but hot oatmeal and almond butter for breakfast sounded crazy. Now that Summer is here I crave these cool fruits and flavors. Yum!
Next up was green smoothies for two.
Mom and I shared a delicious green smoothie around 11:00. It was almost all raw : lots of spinach, frozen banana, Living Harvest Vanilla Hempmilk.
I enjoyed mine.
I’m pretty sure this picture would qualify for the Awkward Family Photos website…
Anyway. I went up to the local health food store to pick up a few things to make raw cookies after my frozen treat.
The cacao nibs and cacao powder are a bit pricey, but there’s a lot in there and a little goes a long way. I also picked up some chia seeds (inspired by the lovely Heather). The guy at the store also gave me a sample of some raw crackers (far right) that were quite tasty. They are sort of blue thanks to spirulina which is a good source of protein, essential fatty acids, and lots of vitamins and minerals. I have seen spirulina called for in many recipes I have come across in various raw food cookbooks. Do you know anything about it?
Once home I was ready to make some lunch. I picked up a piece of Maple Ginger Salmon at the store and put it over a big salad (romaine, carrots, yellow bell pepper, cucumber) with homemade balsamic dressing.
And of course there was dessert:
These organic raspberries were on sale and I couldn’t resist. They were perfect. And there may have been some organic dark chocolate consumed at some point too ![]()
After lunch it was time to start playing with the new toy.
My mom has been dying to try a raw pizza so of course, being the wonderful daughter that I am (ahem, right Mom?), I got started on making a raw pizza crust using a recipe from this book:
The recipes in Living On Live Food are really great. I find Alissa Cohen’s philosophy on raw food to be a bit tooooooooo much for me though. To me, health means balance. She suggests a 100% raw diet. All raw, all the time. That would be unhealthy for me personally, and well, not fun! What’s life without hot, comforting foods like oatmeal, cookies and chewy grainy bread, right? I still LOVE all of her recipes though and followed the one for the “Easiest Pizza Crust.” All that’s in it is ground flax and veggies!
It will take a while for it to “cook” so we won’t be having our pizza until tomorrow. Can’t wait to try it. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted.
I also sliced up some mango to put in the dehydrator:
Raw cookies are on the menu for later too. As you can see Raw Wednesday is in full swing over here. Just tryin’ to keep it alive folks!
Hope you are having a great Wednesday too!

Wow, I wish I had a dehydrator!!! I think that’s what hinders me most from raw foods. So many recipes I want to try need one!

Hi there :) I just noticed you go to UF and I got so excited because I do too :) Gator chicas! Your blog is so adorable and your pictures look like they should be in a magazine! It looks like I need to invest in a dehydrator.. dried fruit is so addicting once you start eating it! Time to google dehydrators… lol
-Shannon :)
Beautiful breakfast!
Can’t wait to see how your dried mangos turn out.
SO jealous of your dehydrator–can’t wait to see what you make with it!
That salmon looks fabulous!
what a fun raw day!!! all of it looks great.
Hey gorgeous!
Love the avo and mango salad! One of my summertime faves. I could live on it.
Not such a fan of Alissa’s — too much dehydration and nuts for this raw girl — but I do love her fun attitude towards kitchen creativity :)
