Four days in NYC is just not enough! We spent hours exploring the city streets this weekend and I feel like we barely made a dent. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?
It’s been so fun to see the city in the Summer (although I don’t really think 68* is Summer….it’s the Florida girl in me) since our last couple of trips to New York have been during Christmas…huge crowds, freezing weather, and Christmas music everywhere!
Our first day was an adventure to say the least. We woke up at 5:00am to get ready and get to the airport for our 7:00am flight. Well, when 7:30 rolled around and they hadn’t even started boarding yet we knew something was up. That’s when we heard the announcement that our flight would be delayed…until 1:00pm!
We were so bummed! We scrambled quickly and were able to get onto another flight with a layover in Atlanta which meant we would be in the city by 2:00pm, just missing our lunch date with Gena. After we got all of that sorted out ANOTHER announcement was made…our original flight was back on and leaving in 20 minutes. I nearly passed out. Seriously? Luckily we were able to get BACK on our original flight…and even better…we were upgraded to first class! I’ll take delays for that any day!
About 30 minutes before we landed the gorgeous view turned into this…
Oh well…a little rain never hurt anyone. Although it did feel a little like Spring Break gone bad once we were in the city and high tailing it to lunch…an impromptu wet t-shirt contest, if you will. Note to self: Do not travel in white shirts.
Luckily we were still able to make our lunch date with Gena (with three minutes to spare!). We dropped our bags of at our hotel and took a cab downtown to meet her at Bonobo’s, a tiny little raw food restaurant with amazing food! I was in the mood for something refreshing to drink and she recommended liquid crack a Coconut Chai. Oh. My. God. This stuff is amazing. I had a few bites of my Mom’s salad too (seaweed salad and some type of “nut meat” veggie combo..that’s the pink stuff) but the healthy fats in my drink filled me up quite well!
Pardon the awkwardly angled photograph…
Gena ordered a beautiful salad and some soup. The green soup is avocado cilantro and the white is coconut bell pepper. The coconut one is AMAZING!
It was so fun to chat with Gena. It was fun to talk to a true New Yorker and hear her stories about growing up in the city. Oh, and we talked about food too…duh.
After our lunch we wandered through Union Square and the downtown area, just shopping and people watching and enjoying our time. I love the fast pace of New York and just watching all the different people. It’s amazing. It was funny for me to think that NY is like this every single day…so busy and energetic. I love it!
Of course one of the things I was most excited about was taking a yoga class in the city. On Thursday night I went to Laughing Lotus for a 90 minute flow class.
It was a beautiful studio with brightly colored walls, gorgeous lotus chandeliers and beautifully painted murals. The teacher (who I actually saw again on Saturday walking through the Theatre District….small world!) was light-hearted, creative and energetic. The music was amazing and the practice was so fun! I loved hearing the busy streets below while in savasana, yet still feeling the quiet and calm that comes at the end of a good session. I was so thankful!
My mom and I were both exhausted from a long day of traveling and walking through the city…we decided to call it a night after a quick dinner but were very excited for the next day, our trip to the Natural Gourmet Institute! Stay tuned…

I loved my time in NYC. It was a LONG time ago on my 18th birthday. We shopped, rode the subway, went to the top of the Empire State Building, went to the top of the Statue of Liberty, ate amazing food, and went to a Broadway musical. Good times. It must have been neat meeting up with Gena. Thanks for sharing.
You’re home, gorgeous!
