Play With Your Food

The sky is falling down on Tampa today…

IMG_8643

I’m all for rainy days, but seriously weatherman, it’s getting old. Can we please have some sunshine? Ok, thanks!

My alarm went off bright and early this morning at 7:15. I, of course, heard it 30 minutes later, hopped out of bed and hurried to get ready before canoeing heading off to work at the studio. Why is it that I can sleep just fine when I have somewhere to be, but with nothing to do I’m up at the crack of dawn? Irony, my friends. Irony.

Despite the bumpy start, it turned out to be a great day! I got the day off of my other “job”, cooking for S and K, and found myself with some extra time on my hands. So what’s a foodie like myself to do with this free afternoon? I played with my food, of course, and made some dinner.

I must admit that I’m mildly embarrassed to share a picture of this aforementioned meal. It was just so darn good that I decided that gracing the pages of this blog with an unappealing picture was worth sharing this deliciousness with you, my lovely readers.

This one was inspired by the lovely Heather. After I saw her creation the other day, and reading that her charming husband enjoyed it TOO, I knew I had to try it.

I spiralized half of a zucchini and threw it in a bowl with a handful of spinach, the juice of half a lemon and 1/4 of an avocado. Then came the best part…I dug my hands right in and “massaged” the veggies to help them relax. What? They looked stressed…

Post- “massage” I stirred in a spoonful of miso paste and a little raw agave. I left out the garlic and decided to just keep it simple by not adding any other veggies this first time around like Heather did.

Ya’ll (yah, I said it)…this is seriously the most delicious thing ever. It was reminiscent of a creamy bowl of fettuccini alfredo… but cold. And without the cheese and butter. Or carbs. But other than that it was just like creamy fettuccini alfredo! I’m not kidding! Open-mouthed Slightly sweet, super creamy and wayyyyy too delicious!

Let’s call this one  The “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover” Salad. I’m contemplating having it for breakfast. Don’t judge…

Off the Mat

Let’s talk music. I get lots of questions about what I like to listen to when I practice. Well, my playlists are a bit like musical potpourri…you never know what you might find.

Sometimes it’s mellow. Think Norah Jones, India.Arie or some simple soothing acoustic guitar (LOVE Andy McKee). Sometimes it’s more yoga-esque with music from Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, and even Snatam Kaur. But I have been known to put some more, err, non-traditional yoga music on my lists. Think T-pain (I know, I can’t believe I am admitting this!), Black Eyed Peas, and Bob Marley (and I hope you like jammin’ too), just to name a few.

The bottom line is that I love ALL kinds of music. What’s the saying? “The more you love music, the more music you love.” Yep, it’s true.

I tend to go through phases with what I like it and often get stuck on a few songs for a while, then move on to the next new favorite. Luckily we are blessed with Pandora which keeps my music collection fresh!

Here are some of the songs on my latest playlist:

Ungodly Fruit by Wax Tailor

The Hop by Radio Citizen feat. Bajka

Panacea (Jimpster Remix) by Fragile State

All I Need by Air

Ain’t No Sunshine by Buddy Guy feat. Tracy Chapman

The Matter by Boom Bip

Ta douleur by Camille

When I Grow Up by Fever Ray

Poses by Rufus Wainwright

Somersault by Zero 7

Desert Sunrise by Brett Dennen

Teardrop by Massive Attack

Supreme Illusion by Thievery Corporation

What kind of music do YOU love? What’s your favorite song?

Isn’t that the creamiest salad ever – I don’t understand why they aren’t serving this in restaurants. It’s CD’s new favorite thing…other than oatgurt. :)

Thanks so much for the shout-out. Glad you enjoyed playing with your food. Your bowl looked amazing!

Favorite song in general? Anything by Patty Griffin. Favorite song to flow to? I am Blessed by Ben Harper.

I have Ta douleur on my iPod too! It’s such a fun song. I just wish real bad that I knew what the heck she is going on about. I don’t speak French. :(

Oh my goodness gracious, those spiralized zucchinis look so incredible — I don’t even know what you are apologizing for! I would eat that in a heartbeat. Well, you did write such a lovely description for them. Yum.

You inspired my dinner tonight…you’ll see…tomorrow…

That zucchini combo looks so awesome! I don’t have a spiralizer but mayeb I’ll be investing in one!

Those are some great songs on your playlist, I love Camille. I’ll have to check out the titles I don’t know.

13 Cyndi Wood July 2, 2009 at 8:16 am

Just found your blog via eatliverun – I love it! As someone else asked, how do you spiral a zucchini? I know there is a tool for that – what’s it called and do you recommend any particular brand? Thank you – Cyndi

GORGEOUS pasta dish, m’dear! 8-)

16 Rachel (rachelsworkbites.com) July 2, 2009 at 9:52 am

I think that the pasta looks good! I like your playlist, I’ve heard of most of those artists but have never heard the songs, I will have to look them up!

17 hungryyogini July 2, 2009 at 10:02 am

Cyndi,
I use a spiralizer. I think the brand I have is spirooli? It’s the same one Gena at choosing raw uses. I love it!

18 Briana (aka Trilby Drew) July 2, 2009 at 10:07 am

Oh my god! I’m am SOOOOO glad you guys are loving my miso dressing recipe! I couldn’t believe it when Heather tried it and referenced me on her site. I almost fell out of my chair!

19 Katharina July 2, 2009 at 12:26 pm

I LOVE AIR!!! They have this one song called Playground Love that is the ULTIMATE seduction song :D

20 Beth @ CrossBorderCravings July 2, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Haha, I have some embarrasing picks too! For the most part I enjoy more low-key music, but sometimes there’s nothing like a little pop or rap to get you moving during a hard work-out!

21 brandi July 2, 2009 at 12:58 pm

looks like you guys are having the weather we had here for all of May + June! I hope it clears up soon!

Music? Way too many…but my faves:
Jason Mraz (early coffeehouse stuff is the best)
Ben Harper
G. Love
311
Incubus (swoon for Brandon Boyd)
AAR
Coldplay, early stuff
and many, many more…

22 Jenn (eating bender) July 2, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Hi Courtney!

I love the concept of massaging your veggies :) That creation from Heather looks amazing! I think you should totally have it for breakfast. And now I officially added “spiralizer” to my kitchen gadget wish list. If only Bobby didn’t think I had way too many already, haha…

I love Pandora!! Seriously, best site ever. Have a wonderful day, lady!

23 Kimberly@Living Free July 2, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Guess what I must have for lunch tomorrow?:) Do you think this would work if I shred the zucchini? I don’t have a spiralizer! I’ll give a try. How did I miss this on Heather’s blog? I don’t EVEN know because it looks very yummy!

24 hungryyogini July 3, 2009 at 7:20 am

Kimberly,
I don’t know if it would work the same but it doesn’t hurt to try. Good luck!

25 Chelsea July 3, 2009 at 8:23 am

26 alexis July 3, 2009 at 8:42 am

27 Natalie M. July 3, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Hi Courtney!

Been reading your blog for awhile now.. and I’ve decided to come out of the woodwork and comment. Don’t fret… in NYC we’ve gotten more rain than ever… its like every day crazy downpours.. Tampa is just sharing the rainy love! The sun has decided to finally come out today.. hopefully it sticks around.

Your recipe looks delish! Can’t wait to try it.

I don’t have a favorite type of music.. My musical taste is ridiculously eclectic

I dig Bjork, Zero 7 is awesomeness, Prince, Madonna, Esthero, Muse, The Script, Jill Scott, India Arie just to name a few

Favorite Song: Material Girl by Madonna lol! Its so much fun :music:

28 Gabby July 9, 2009 at 11:45 am

Hi! This is a stupid question or maybe its somewhere else on your site (I’m new here.) But how does one spiral zucchini? I see some have a spiral-izer? Not sure what that is but what else can you use?

It looks amazing!

Thanks!

29 hungryyogini July 9, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Gabby,
Yep, you use a special gadget called a spiralizer. You could also just slice it over a mandolin into thin slices for the same effect. You’ll get thin strips rather than noodles. It would still taste great though!
