Good Habit

by hungryyogini on July 14, 2009

I’ve always known I’ve been a bit of a repetitive eater. You know the type, they eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner day after day (after day, after day…) but are happy as a clam with their few favorites.  I never realized how boring the things I eat actually are….until now.

I haven’t really been blogging about the food I’m eating, just what I make for S and K. But I think you would thank me for not showing you what I was eating…talk about deja vu! Lots of almond butter (1 jar and a half in the last two weeks….don’t judge), veggies and healthy grains like quinoa and rice.

But.

I have tried a few new things in the last week or so that I wanted to share with you.

First up, medjool dates and (drumroll, please) brie. Oh my, you must try this. Sweet and creamy and slightly salty.

I also found a new favorite Kombucha flavor. Goodbye Grape! Superfruits, you complete me.

Oh, and of course dark chocolate…do you think I have enough in my stash? This should last a week or so…maybe.

Last but not least, chia seeds. We have had a package of these sitting in the cupboard for a while, ever since Heather introduced them to the blogging world and sparked my interest. I finally decided to give ‘em a whirl this morning in my oats.

IMG_8803

I put a tablespoon into my oats once they were done and slightly cooled.

Although that may have defeated the purpose of the whole raw thing.

Anyway.

The verdict? Delicious! They gave my oats a great texture and nutty flavahhh.

They are so amazing for you too! Click here for a great article on their many health benefits. Here’s a few to spark your interest Wink

     – Chia seeds, which form a gel-like substance when mixed with water,  can delay the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and allow it to happen at a steady pace.

     – They are a wonderful source of the omega-3 fatty acid, protein and fiber.

     – They are also a great source of calcium.

After reading about chia seeds and talking to some friends about them (yep, we actually yalked about chia seeds), I’m planning on incorporating them into my daily (somewhat repetitive) diet.

Despite the fact that my daily diet has been less than exciting, I’m quite content with it. Bring on the veggies and almond butter! Do you eat different things every day? What’s the one food you can’t live without everyday?

I have a few…apples, almond butter, and chocolate.  Delicious.

Have a great day!

I’ve been known to have the same thing daily too! Right now I am loving dark chocolate (randomly I’ve started to crave it like never before!), avocado, and almond butter. Healthy fats, hell yes! ;)

2 MarathonVal July 14, 2009 at 8:02 am

I HAVE to be an enormous quantity of avocados (some ripe, some about to be ripe) on hand at all times, spinach, fruit, and dark chocolate! If I have those three things I am a happy girl!

OMG – dates + brie?! Genious!!! I have been wanting to try chia seeds for awhile, but just can’t seem to find them around here…perhaps I’ll have to look online!

4 brandi July 14, 2009 at 8:25 am

mmm…i love dark chocolate.

I get in the same ruts, especially with snacks + breakfast. There are usually 2-3 breakfast that I rotate, but are basically the same, but I love them and they fill me up!

I love chia too! I can’t live without bananas, almond butter, and avocados.

6 Daria (Summer of the CSAs) July 14, 2009 at 8:43 am

I’m such a repetitive eater too! Lately it’s been the same bowl of oats every morning (pb, bananas, cocoa powder, cinnamon) and nearly the same dinner every night – a huge mess of veggies from our CSA sauteed with a few eggs. Boring, perhaps, but delicious!

Where do you buy your chia seeds? Do you think they are available in a standard grocery store? If so what section?
Sorry for all the questions I am just so excited about this new seed to try! Thanks for introducing it to me :) Have a great day!

lexi,
I bought them at a small health food store here, but I’m sure you can order them online. I would google chia seeds and see if any come up. Also, I would ask the people at your local store. Hope you find them!

I get into major food ruts- posted a couple of days ago about how I suddenly realised how sick I am of felafel! Lol. Never thought I would see the day :P

I am dying to try chia but have had no luck hunting it down…might need to get it online!

I go almond butter by the jarful too!! Don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s the almond butter :) You’re pics are so pretty/mouthwatering….yum!

I think bananas are something I have everyday… I feel really off if I don’t have one. I try not to be repetitive.. and I don’t think I really am because I usually base my grocery shopping off of recipes that I’ve found and want to try. Plus I’m so curious about flavor combinations, that I’m usually mixing it up someway or another.

I have definitely been in foodie rut recently — though i don’t know if you can call it a rut — basically, i’ve been eating the same foods everyday but i’m just not tired of ‘em at all :) i like ruts!

13 VeggieGirl July 14, 2009 at 9:55 am

I’m all over your chocolate stash! :-D

14 Michelle July 14, 2009 at 9:59 am

Dates and Brie is amazing. Also blue cheese. Also frozen. Also carmalise w/a tad of butter over pancakes or in oats. YUMMY!! I totally know what you mean though about eating the same thing. I actually have to make something else sometimes…I also don’t want to, but end up being glad that I did.

I think there’s something to be said for repetitive eating! If you’re not bored with it, that is. If it works for your body and your taste buds, why not? That said, I don’t eat the same things every day on purpose, but I think there is a little dried fruit and chocolate in there somewhere pretty consistently!

+1 on the Superfruits GT, it’s one of my favs as well.

17 Ellen (Peace In Motion) July 14, 2009 at 1:28 pm

I am SUCH a repetitive eater. I think I ate the same thing for breakfast everyday senior year of high school. I tend to buy things and just eat them til they are gone, so as to avoid having them go bad. It’s good to know that there is someone else out there like me!

18 Rose July 14, 2009 at 2:20 pm

My meals are generally the same too. It’s easier that way – and I waste a lot less! You are not alone :)

19 Rachel (rachelsworkbites.com) July 14, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I feel the same exact way! I sometimes struggle with coming up with fresh ideas to make, but I could eat greek yogurt and bread with almond butter and banana everydaaaaaaaaaay!

20 Beth @ CrossBorderCravings July 14, 2009 at 4:00 pm

I hear you on eating the same things all the time! I can’t live without some PB each day! Luckily there’s about a million ways to eat it :-).

21 Emily July 14, 2009 at 4:37 pm

I’ve been reading your posts regularly for a bit now and just wanted to say that I love reading about your recipes – they’re always so fresh and beautiful.

Also, I can definitely relate to feeling a bit repetitive – sometimes I feel pressure to eat something different for the sake of not being too entirely boring! Your idea for the date and brie is amazing though – yum! Have you ever tried Green & Black’s Mayan dark chocolate? It is so good – tastes like orange and spices. Let me know if you try it! :)

Hope you’re having a great one!

22 Crunchy Granola Gal July 14, 2009 at 4:48 pm

i get into ruts with breakfast… for awhile it was oatmeal prepared the exact same way every day, but for the past few months it’s been a different kind of dry cereal with either soy or 1% milk and 1 banana or a banana/blueberry combo. i crave it daily!

mmm, brie and turkey sandwich = heaven!

23 Mia {runs and rests} July 14, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Can’t live without bananas! :D
I’m also a repetitive eater and just jazz up my eats with anything interesting I pick up from the grocery. Latest discovery were these pickling melons that were given to me by a workmate.

24 Kimberly@Living Free July 14, 2009 at 7:36 pm

I tend to eat the same things over and over too:) I keep thinking I need to try a rotation diet, but can’t seem to do it. I have been stuck on sunbutter lately and of course 70% chocolate! I almost bought that Kombucha drink last week but was afraid I wouldn’t like it. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

25 Courtney July 14, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Hii! So this is my first time at your site and I am so excited I fell upon it. Your story really makes me feel that I am not alone! I’m just starting out on my blog and hope that it can develop into something like yours! Awesome job! I can’t wait to start coming back more often!

26 jessica July 14, 2009 at 8:52 pm

ooo goody i cant wait to try superfruits then! i loved my grape today. it was amazing.

27 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope July 14, 2009 at 9:07 pm

I do try to switch things up from day to day. That being said, I definitely do have my favorites… almond butter, Larabars, apples, wraps, etc.

OMG, I LOVED that Superfruits flavor. I seriously think it’s my favorite. I’m so hooked on those drinks! :)

28 Courtney (Courtney's Concoctions) July 15, 2009 at 2:20 am

I think it is normal when you only have yourself to cook for! I often make a huge smoothie for breakfast. Lunch is where I really mix it up, because my creative juices are flowing. Right now I am really into avocado and sundried tomatoes on toast. Dinner is usually veggies of some sort, but I try to at least mix up the sauces!

29 hungryyogini July 15, 2009 at 5:04 am

Emily,
I will have to try that! It sounds delicious =)

30 She-Fit July 15, 2009 at 11:57 am

I am going to have to try those chai seeds! Thanks!

31 Sammi July 18, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Hmm, I am actually the kind of person that has a couple absolute favorites but other than that LOVES to mix it around very often. So good for you for trying new things! I never heard of Chia seeds, but now you’ve sparked my interest.
