Just Workin’ On My Fitness

by hungryyogini on October 20, 2009

Wanna see my fancy office chair?

IMG_9835

Oh, yes I did! As if they didn’t think I was strange enough…the whole healthy food eating, fermented tea drinking (mmm, Kombucha…I love you), yoga practicing, fitness ball sitting thing makes me quite a character at work. Dare to be different, my friends Wink

I’m so glad I brought this little guy to work. Not only do I have no lower back pain after a day at the office, but I get to bounce up and down and look really cool all day at work Hot Any other cool fitness ball peeps out there? If you don’t, hop on board. It’s good for you!

I found myself with a bit of free time today and honestly didn’t know what to do with myself! It’s the first time in a few weeks that I have had a free afternoon to do what I want with.

So what did I do? Well, I went back to work! But not until I went for a glorious 4-mile walk around campus, and made a delicious lunch.

I just stir-fried some broccoli and cauliflower ,broccoli slaw, spinach and black beans in coconut oil, salt and pepper, and Mexican seasoning. I put some organic salsa on after the picture and it was delicious!

One of my readers asked me for specific measurements of the things I ate, but I have to be honest, I don’t measure anything. In fact, I refuse to these days.

I used to be obsessed with measurements. No more than 1 tbsp of peanut butter, exactly half a cup of oats, no more than 2 oz of turkey…you get the picture. It’s kind of the same thing as the scale for me…it just takes me to a not so happy place, where my happiness is literally measured by what I eat, how I work out, etc. I just choose not to go there . It’s easy to get wrapped up in all of that stuff; the number on the scale, the “perfect” diet or workout, the ideal body. We have to choose to ignore all of that noise and really listen to what we want and need. And that’s that.

After my afternoon walk, I headed back to work for a few hours, then picked up some dinner on the way home at the local organic market.

A salad from the salad bar (for $3!):

And a sweet ‘tater:

I also had some camera shy rotisserie chicken for a little protein action. It was a simple meal, but very delicious!

Looks like I have a bit of free time tomorrow morning too! I’m definitely going to whip out my yoga mat (which I have been neglecting for far too long!) in the morning. Just me, my mat and some new tunes…

Mmm, sounds perfect.

I’ve been thinking about getting a ball chair for my office – I spend a lot of time sitting!

2 Shannon, Tropical Eats October 20, 2009 at 10:04 pm

That bouncy ball looks like fun! Nothing beats a yummy salad bar. I love going to Ruby Tuesdays and loading my salad up with all of the tasty goodies…especially Craisins. mmm

Great post! I feel your pain, haha. I’m a teacher and when I bring in baked goods my students are like, “Uhh do they have weird stuff in them?” I try to pretend that weird is just a term of endearment they use for things like chia seeds or pumpkin puree. Love the bouncy chair – AND I just tried kombucha for the first time today! (check out my new post :)

I used to complusively measure as well, and I think its been relly good for me being in a different country with a totally different system. It take effort to convert kJ into calories, so without realizing it I just sort of stopped.

I loooove my medicine ball. I wish I could carry it around with me to class, but that might get me some SUPER strange looks, not to mention the desks are attatched to the chairs.

Have a lovely day!!

You have a good taste in music. I approve ;)

6 Mama Pea October 21, 2009 at 1:39 am

Yup, no more measuring spoons OR scales for me. There’s no joy in trying to measure up for me. I’m glad you are free too!

7 Shelby October 21, 2009 at 5:40 am

I’m so glad you don’t measure anymore either! It’s such a freeing feeling!

8 Sarah October 21, 2009 at 7:18 am

I need to get a ball chair too! :)

9 Allie (Protein Girl) October 21, 2009 at 7:36 am

I am moving my fitball to my office STAT! You rock.

10 Keira, kids eating healthy advocate October 21, 2009 at 7:47 am

@Ellen,

Ohhh. My kids used to be like that too! I can’t make them eat a single speck of veggie, I don’t the repulsion seemed to be born with them. lol. But now it’s not bothering me anymore. It’s wonderful when you see them creating their own healthy choices, picking healthy, fresh fruits and stuff in the grocery. :)

@hungryyogini,
The lunch you made and the pics you posted are just mouth-watering. I’ll give it a try based on how you said you did it here in your post, and will get back to you ;)

11 Tina October 21, 2009 at 8:27 am

Ahhh I would LOVE one of those as a chair. I can’t stand sitting at my desk for long periods of time. I wish I had a standing desk!

12 healthy ashley October 21, 2009 at 9:25 am

When I worked in an office I had a chair with a ball as the chair part… I was definitely the “special” one in my office! It was fun to bounce, though!

13 Maggie October 21, 2009 at 12:45 pm

I sooo need to get one of these chairs!

I’m getting lax about measuring too – it’s nice ;)

14 Gena (Choosing Raw) October 21, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Your broc slaw always looks awesome!

15 Jenny October 21, 2009 at 4:11 pm

I am so anal when it comes to measuring – one thing that I REALLY need to work on! Though i’m progressing.. I haven’t measured out my hummus in weeks now. Lame, I know – but it’s something!

16 Emily October 21, 2009 at 6:53 pm

loveee the “chair”

i’m totally working on not measuring too, i was so happy to see that you don’t measure! it makes listening to your body so much easier and enjoyable!

17 Nicci@NiftyEats October 21, 2009 at 8:55 pm

I think I could take my ball to work too. People already think the food I eat is weird. Nothing weird just good ole healthy eats.

18 Morgan @ Life After Bagels October 21, 2009 at 11:34 pm

whoa – a $3 salad . . . how did you do it lady, mine usually cost like $12

19 CinnamonQuill October 22, 2009 at 11:22 am

Love your desk chair. So fancy! ;-)

20 MarathonVal October 22, 2009 at 10:19 pm

I love your desk chair!! I’ve thought about doing that before, but I was worried that I would have MORE back pain… did you find it hard at first? I’d love to hear your experience in more detail before I go through the humiliation of lugging one into the inner city school where I work and deal with the stares and eye rolls :)

21 Liz October 24, 2009 at 12:02 am

Those balls are great for sitting on. I’ve used them before for sitting at my old desk. Totally help the posture.

22 Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) October 25, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Simple meals are usually my favorite, and no more than 1 TBSP of peanut butter is just nutty…no pun intended. :)

Hope you enjoyed your time on the mat.

23 Elina October 25, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Oh man, there is no way I could be THAT brave! I can only imagine the looks, questions and haggling in my office if I brought a ball for a chair. Good for you, though. It’s definitely awesome! If I had a home office, I’d totally use it :)
If you have some free time, check out my V8 soup giveaway ;)

24 charlie October 28, 2009 at 8:27 pm

“it’s easy to get wrapped up in all of that stuff; the number on the scale, the “perfect” diet or workout, the ideal body. We have to choose to ignore all of that noise and really listen to what we want and need. And that’s that.”

Wow, very powerful statement right there, with all of the magazines, tv shows and social media telling people what they should or shouldn’t looks like, what they have to put in their mouths for the perfect 6 pack and everything else it’s hard to filter out what you really need to hear.

I’m definitely “tweeting” (I think that’s a word now…lol) this out so that people realize that in order to be truly happy they have to do exactly what you just said, “ignore the noise.”

Great stuff

27 eatmovelove October 29, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Great post – especially the line “We have to choose to ignore all of that noise…” – so true. I have so much noise going on in my head that I can’t tell which is “me” anymore it seems. Even when I eat something – like chocolate EVERY day – without craving it – I feel guilty about it because I compare myself to those who DON’T do that…like my friends who just eat a simple dinner and then go on and do something else. I just hope to acheive balance someday because right now I’m pretty sure it’s not going to change overnight…and the chocolate will be there again tommorow whether I need it or am hungry for it or not.

28 Diana (Soap & Chocolate) October 30, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Could not agree more – I never want to go back to a place where I measured my self-worth the same way I measured my food. Wise words from you, Courtney (as usual!). :D

29 Adi (oatonomy.com) October 31, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Fitness balls are banned as office chairs where I work. :(
I’d sure love to use one though!

30 Emily October 31, 2009 at 11:18 pm

hahahah! LOVE it! :D

31 Jess (What's Normal, Anyways?) November 1, 2009 at 1:04 pm

I keep a exercise ball in my living room as one of my chairs….well and to exercise with too! I love the bounce effect too, and of course doing supported backbends!

32 Brittany November 1, 2009 at 8:02 pm

I LOVE your idea to bring the stability ball to work. I’ve seriously considered it multiple times. Everyone at work already things I’m a health nut so this would just be icing on the cake. But, I’m okay with that. :)

33 Hannah Jane November 2, 2009 at 6:16 pm

Hey, I totally know where you were coming from with the measuring thing. I find myself doing that way to often…juding my diet and the scale by the numbers. It really is ridiculous. Way to go!
Love the office chair.

34 Paige (Running Around Normal) November 5, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Fancy Schmancy! ;) haha love it:) People at work think I’m a little weird too with my healthy habbits, I can only imagine the looks and comments I’d get if I brought in a balance ball!

35 Damjana November 5, 2009 at 2:14 pm

I have the same chair as you, even in the same colour:)

36 Julie @savvyeats November 6, 2009 at 12:29 am

I love the idea of bringing a stability ball to work. Maybe I’ll have to use mine when I’m studying at home…

Just found your blog, and I love it! Adding you to my reader… now.

37 Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope November 9, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Hope you update soon! I keep seeing snippets of info on Twitter regarding France!? :-)

38 Jen (Running With Cake) November 10, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Great idea for your new office chair! Your desk must be really low, otherwise you have an extremely large ball (that sounds funny!).
