Musical Potpourri

by hungryyogini on December 17, 2009

My yoga studio here in Tampa recently started a donation based community class on Thursday afternoons. All the proceeds from the class go to the Exalted Warrior Foundation which brings yoga to wounded soldiers and veterans.

When I graduated from yoga teacher training, each of us had the opportunity to sign up to teach on one of the Thursday’s, and I signed up for December 17.

After trying to come up with several excuses not to do it due to the fact that I’m a little chicken (bock bock), I finally put my big girl panties on, went down to the studio, and taught my first “real” class to the lone student that came Wink

I was intimidated to be teaching at the studio where I have come to know and respect so many teachers. Leaves me feeling like I have to fill some pretty big shoes a pretty big yoga mat. But what good would it be to avoid the situation, for fear I might make a fool of myself!? Exactly!

I really enjoyed teaching, and my student had a really strong practice, a lot like my own, which made it much easier to teach her. The nerves went away seconds after we got started. We did lots of warriors, and lots and lots of twists. A little “detox before the retox” as I like to call it. What? The holidays are comin’ up and you KNOW you are going to want an extra glass of Aunt Betty’s special spiked eggnog…

I thought I’d share my playlist from today with you, especially after reading my friend Tiffany’s post on music for teaching. This one matched my mood – it’s a bit all over the place (much like myself!). I like to think of it as musical potpourri. You just don’t know what you’re gonna get next!

Community Yoga Playlist

It’s not what I’d listen to all day every day, but it made for a great class and I really enjoyed the music. Don’t worry, my student did too!

I came home hungry and itchin’ for something delicious. I didn’t feel like eating vegetables – so I decided to drink them!

This guy had almond milk, 1/2 a banana, a handful of frozen blueberries, chocolate brown rice protein, and spinach – the wonder vegetable!

I’ll leave you with some wise words that helped me today – hopefully you will get an extra boost of confidence from it too Open-mouthed

Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.

Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

i wish i could take one of your classes. i’ve been wanting to get into yoga, but i’m really nervous ,i feel like yoga would be a great thin gfor me because it would teach me how to love exercise without necessarily burning 20938023 (exaggeration..obvs) calories agian. & i think it could be possibly therapeutic/relaxing for me. people who get into yoga seem to really rave about it. i’m just really nervous because i feel lik ei’m not flexible at all and i feel like i would suck at it and it would be realy embarassing!! do you have any advice?

You rock, wish I could have made it… stuck in a nasty meeting tho… NOW, it’s time for me to “put my big girl panties on” and teach one in the studio ;)

I’m sure you did just wonderfully, girl. I would pay big buckaroos to go to one of your classes :)

YAY for you on teaching your first class!

When I first started teaching Pilates classes I was nervous. But it got way better the more I taught. I still got a little stage fright right before class after that – but I felt better and more confident over time. And once class was in full swing I was golden. Practice makes better! ;-)

Anything new is always tough.

This is an awesome playlist! I’m going to play this while doing some yoga in a bit :)

Good for you for putting the big girl panties on and teaching! That is so exciting. You should be very proud of yourself!

Yum! Your green smoothie sounds delicious. I really enjoy your blog. A co-worker turned me on to it and I must say that I’m hooked. Happy Blogging.
