Holier than Thou

by hungryyogini on December 27, 2009

Yesterday I woke up and did the usual morning activities.

Ate breakfast.

Rolled around on the floor and called it yoga.

Showered and brushed my teeth.

Got a piercing.

No big. Just a moment of spontaneity. Actually, it was inspired by my ultra fashionable cousin Danielle, and since I like to be a follower (well, sometimes…), I did just that. Pretty fun, huh?

I now have 7  holes in my ears…well 8, if you count the first time the did it yesterday. I had to go back and have them fix it because it didn’t end up in the right spot. No worries…I only wear 2 (well, 3 now) at a time!

This morning’s activities didn’t include any bodily hole punching…just some butt kickin’. I have been working on my home practice and after last weekend’s workshop with Krista and Brock Cahill, I realized how many areas of my body are “asleep” while I practice. Inspired by their creative style I hopped on the mat for a quick flow that went a little somethin’ like this:

- Start with 8-10 minutes of core work. Bicycles, Navasana (boat pose) and things of that nature. It helps to build some "heat” in your core to keep the awareness there throughout your whole practice.

- Sun salutes – A’s and B’s are a good ol’ standby to get the body movin’ and groovin’.  Or you can take Krista’s variation that she calls fun salutes. Fun salutes, my aunt fanny.

- Various standing poses – I love to practice triangle everyday…something about it just makes me feel good. Include your favorites here.

- A few handstands never hurt anyone. Kick on up from standing split and float back down…it’s fun!

- Time to get grounded: Low lunges, forward folds, half splits, pigeon pose…icing on the cake!

- And Savasanaaaaaaaaaaa.

When I practice at home it typically looks a bit like that. I usually shoot for an hour…but sometimes it comes out to less. But a little yoga is better than no yoga.

After playing on the mat (all while listening to Ane Brun on Grooveshark….love her!), I made my way into the kitchen for a quick lunch. After an indulgent week of holiday meals, I have  wanted nothing but veggies and clean, fresh meals. This salad had baby romaine, steamed broccoli, rotisserie chicken, cucumber, avocado, a squeeze of lemon, and spicy hummus (that I later poured sriracha on…the hotter the better!).

Now that I’m yoga-ed, and fed, I’m off to conquer the world day! Happy Last Week of the Year!

I’ll leave you with two questions:

1. Do you have multiple ear piercings? Please say yes so I don’t feel like swiss cheese…

2. Do you have a home yoga practice? What and when do you like do practice?

I have two piercings in both ears…sometimes I forget about the second holes though.

Owie! I’ve heard it hurts in the cartilage like that! I had two in each ear, but my second holes got scar tissue and I actually had to have a procedure to have it removed. I also used to have a belly button ring, but not anymore!

3 Shannon, Tropical Eats December 27, 2009 at 2:47 pm

2 in each ear but like Nicci, I always forget about the second holes lol!.. it’s kind of weird though because they never close up. i should put them back in though. one day i want to get a cartilage piercing.

I have multiple holes in my ears but I always forget to put earrings in them. Except for the cartilage…which I never take out. Kind of gross now that I think about it

I’ve got my nose, bellybutton, traigus, ruck, cartilage on one ear (x2), plus 7 between both lobes of my ear. If you’re swiss cheese, then what I amI? hahaa

I actually have 4 piercings. I got my cartilage pierced last year and HATED it, so I grew it back in. But, yup, now I have 4 (2 in each ear)!

What a great yoga session! I love pulling out my mat and simply doing whatever poses feel right in the moment.

Quick question… could you do handstands and headstands before you did your teacher training? I seem to have such difficulties getting those poses! Any suggestions?

Love the piercing! I have 5 in my ears. I love yoga, and do whatever poses are needed that day. I always do my sun salutations and depending on how my bad feels I either do work on the floor or standing. Love love love cobra. Definitely my fav!

Love the new piercing. It definitely looks adorable and not cheesy at all! :)

I have 5, but I think I let the one on top grow shut. I liked it at the time, but as I got older and started working in a more professional atmosphere, it just didn’t seem appropriate.

Love the yoga workout! Sounds invigorating.

Take care darling girl!

Only have one hole is each ear. I wanted a second hole in high school and my mom would not let me. Then, once i moved away from home, i got the top part pierced and it got infected. So, now, i just have to one hole in each.

I am working on my home practice. I struggle with it big time.

want to hear a secret? I don’t have my ears pierced at all. I was always such a huge tomboy in middle school and then in high school I was just too chicken. Now? I suppose I’m just still too chicken :)

I love doing yoga bright and early.. it’s such a great start to the day. I think I’m yogadownload.com’s best customer.

I actually have zero piercings! But I’m thinking of getting my ears pierced just so I can wear these awesome earrings I bought in Kenya. Speaking of Kenya, my home practice became really important to me throughout the past 4 months I spent in Nairobi. My mat became a place of solace in such a hectic city. I found myself being drawn to lots of restorative poses, heart openers, and hip openers. For some reason, half-pigeon became my favorite pose. It’s just so comforting.

First of all-love your blog! I’ve been lurkin’ for awhile now, but this is the first comment I’ve made. I happened upon you based on my interests-food/nutrition (I’m going to school to be a dietitian) and yoga (I’m also planning to become certified to teach).
I’ve been doing yoga for about 7 years now, and really struggle with practicing at home as I currently am too broke to go to a studio. Lately I’ve been forcing myself to do it though. I usually start with several sun salutations, getting faster as I go. Then I move to the floor and do some hip-openers like cobbler’s pose or pigeon, and possibly a few back bends. If all else fails, I put in one of Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga DVDs.
Any suggestions for other DVD’s I might check out?
Keep up the good work with the blog-it’s very inspirational!

Dena,
Thanks for commenting! I love Shiva Rea’s DVD’s!!

14 hungryyogini December 27, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Heather,
Yes, I could. But I was a gymnast so I cheated a bit ;) Try practicing at the wall and then work your way off. You’ll get there!

Cool new ear piercing! And your practice sounds amazingly wonderful :)

1. I don’t have multiple piercings, just the one. But I’m not into wearing earrings that often (I just don’t think about it), so I don’t really need more holes to worry about haha

2. I enjoy both attending yoga classes for the structure an instructor provides, but most nights, I like to do some downward dogs, pigeons, etc to relax before bed.

16 Shelley December 27, 2009 at 11:01 pm

your piercing is adorablee!! i like it :) and that salad looks amazing.

17 Laura-Ashley December 28, 2009 at 9:58 am

Multiple piercings here! I like them because they are fun and expressive, but if you ever get tired of them you can take them out! P.S. Love the music you share.

I have a hole in each ear, my nose and my belly button so don’t feel like swiss cheese! Piercings are fun and heal over if needed :O).

19 Meg's Gut December 28, 2009 at 5:48 pm

I only just have a piercing in each ear…nothing special.
But, I do practice yoga at home almost daily. I usually do a few sun salutations, mix it up with some planks and a bit of pilates, and sometimes I’ll google yoga lessons on youtube!
Your fresh veggie plate looks delicious.
I’ve never seen that water before, where do you get it?

20 hungryyogini December 28, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Meg,
It’s actually Kombucha that I get at Whole Foods or Greenwise. I just call it yogi water =)

LOVE THE NEW HEADER/DESIGN!! Not sure if this is the finished product or not, but I adore it Courtney!!

And props for getting another piercing. I have the two on my ears and that is IT. Such a wimp…considering another ear piercing but dunno which would be the least painful… any suggestions?? :)

22 Gillian December 29, 2009 at 5:17 pm

I used to have 7 ear piercings and have my nose pierced! Eventually I got fed up with losing my nose ring and earrings and cut down to two earrings and my belly button ring. I still miss diming up my ears with studs though! It looks lovely on you!
