Our study abroad program has kept us really busy these past few weeks – tours of Versaille, Notre Dame, the champagne caves of Taittinger, and Montmartre, class during the day, and piles of reading that I’m just not used to as a Finance major. We’ve enjoyed the sights and have learned a lot but were more than ready to have a free day and took complete advantage of it yesterday.
Around noon yesterday, after a quick visit to a local cafe for coffee and quiche, we headed out to Marché d’Aligre to stock up on fresh produce. We’d heard it was one of the cheapest in town and that it’s also open every day except Monday. We took the metro down to the Ledru-Rollin stop and walked down a block to find the street filled with fellow market-goers and vendors yelling across the way about their freshest produce and deals.
We wandered through for a while, stocking up on fresh produce, talking to the vendors, and taking it all in. We made our way home to drop off our goodies…
…one of which is a newfound favorite. Litchis.
Seriously delicious. Several didn’t make it home in my bag ![]()
We headed out again and to the metro to Abbesses which plops us right in Montmartre. We wanted to see Sacre-Coeur when it was less foggy. And also wanted to visit a little boulangerie called Le Grenier A Pain for bites of olive bread and macarons.
We took the funiculaire up to the top to see the view of the whole city and to gaze at Sacre-Couer for a little while.
sighhhhhh.
What a day! It was our first day spent really wandering around and doing things on our own agenda. We enjoyed every minute!
A few sidenotes…
Today is Yoga Day USA. YogaVibes is celebrating by giving discounts (50% off!) on all purchases today! Head on over to their site and put in the code YogaDay50 when you check out.
And this one is totally random…but my camera (Canon 30D) is acting up. It keeps saying Error 99. Two things: Does anyone have any idea what this might mean? And does anyone happen to know of a camera repair shop in Paris? All suggestions are appreciated ![]()
Bonne journée!

AWESOME pics, as usual…espescially the patisserie, yum!
Love your pics!
Delicious!
On my canon xsi, error 99 means I am trying to use settings on the camera that don’t “go” with the lens I am using.
omg i would go to france just to eat french macaroons and bread!!
Sorry you’re having the problem! Read this on one of my photography sites:
Following message from Canon USA. Hope it helps you isolate the problem.
To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.
If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.
Forgot to say, the above message was for your specific camera – Canon 30D. Enjoying all your captures!
Seriously, I’m so tempted to just pack up my backs and head to Paris
Wicked jealous!!
Beautiful pictures, I just love seeing all of the freshness the city has to offer. We don’t see much of that in my small upstate NY town. :)
I have a Canon Rebel xsi, not sure about your error though. Here is a link that might help: http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50mm-lens-contact-points/

I’ve always wanted to try lychees!! What do they actually taste like??
Beautiful photos… :-D
Marche d’Aligre is one of my favourites!!! Last time I was there I bought a papaya and a mango that blew my mind. If you see a guy chopping up exotic fruit for sampling try them all! Near the end of the street by the main road is also a great middle eastern food store where you can by cheap bulk nuts, olives, chickpeas, hummus and other delicious treats.
I’m so happy I can come to your blog for a taste of Paris :)
Gillian,
Found the middle easter store today!!! So much deliciousness. The spices are really cool too. Will definitely be going back! Bought 3 mangoes for 1 euro. Sweet!!!
My sister was just in Paris and she walked those super steep stairs!
Lychees are my favorite. You should try longans too. They’re smaller and sweeter.
All those desserts/cakes/breads look so good. I would have wanted one of each…
