It’s the beginning of week 7 here in Paris and I just can’t believe it. It’s a big week at school – midterms, papers, readings, museum visits. The works. I’m savoring all the little “me-moments” I can get!
Is that selfish? Well….good.
Let’s see. “Me-moment” number one. Chocolate. Did you know that it’s a vegetable? And it’s also an acceptable breakfast food? Well, a girl can dream…
I seriously can’t get enough of this dark chocolate. Thank you Gillian Young….seriously. I love this stuff. I’ve been eating it with my coffee. In the mornings. With breakfast. Don’t judge.
“Me-moment” number two. One hour of glorious yoga. Glorious, grounding, booty-kickin’ yoga. It felt so good to spend some time on the mat, feelin’ the changes in my body. Not judging them, just feeling them. My hips and hamstrings are tighter they have been in a long time, but that’s okay…it’s proof that I’ve been wandering this glorious city on foot! But I’m glad I got on the mat and stretched it out a bit – not to mention I’ve gotta keep that handstand practice up so I can take pictures all over the city when the weather gets better ![]()
“Me-moment” number three was delicious. I haven’t made a real dinner at home for myself in what feels like forever so I spent some time in the kitchen this evening cookin’ up something healthy and delicious.
On the menu…quinoa. Love this stuff.
We are really fancy here. Like the cover to our pot? Like I said, fancy.
One of my latest favorite thing to cook is onions and peppers. Just slice ‘em up, and let them do their thang (yes, a technical term) in the pan with some EVOO until they are browned and delicious.
Ohh. And if you feel extra fancy, splash in some balsamic vinegar at the end and let it cook down a bit. It gets all sweet and syrupy and delicious. Mmm.
et Voila! Dinner is served!
Quinoa, steamed broccoli, peppers and onions and an over medium egg. Nothing special but it sure was good. Mmmm.
I’m finding it really easy to eat healthy in Paris. And you know what else? I love that everyone eats food the way it was supposed to be eaten. Low-fat things like yogurt and milk are scarcely available, but full fat dairy is clearly the most popular choice. Also, when you go to the charcuterie, you don’t see them advertising for lean chicken and low fat bison – nope, not here. Bring on the marbled cuts of steak! Oh, and on any given day you can wander to a marché and buy fresh, local produce.
I had a little moment of clarity when I thought about all of that today. I cooked my dinner tonight in lots of olive oil, and fried the egg in butter. I’ve been snacking on flavorful cheeses and some of the creamiest yogurt I’ve had in quite some time, and heating almonds and cashews like it’s going out of style. And I feel gooooooooooood. Healthy and wholesome. And gooooooood.
Yep. Such a simple thing, and something that causes lots of fear and anxiety for us Type-A perfectionist-perfect-eater-non-cheaters-yada-yada-yada. Trust me, I have my moments, especially living in a place where I’m surrounded by chocolate and pastries and butter. Lots of butter. But why would we go and try to mess up something as glorious as crème liquide (ahem, which I may or may not have been putting in my coffee), by taking all the fat out!? Now THAT sounds crazy.
Well. Enough about me. Did you have any “me-moments” for yourself today? What’s something you do everyday that is just for you?
It’s bedtime for me, friends. I turn into a pumpkin after midnight
Good night!

It’s true, the reason French food is so delicious is because they don’t skimp on anything good, but eat tons of produce to balance it out. Why can’t we all be like that?! Dark chocolate is absolutely an acceptable breakfast food, by the way :)
I’m so glad you’re having your me-moments. It’s important :)
Also, I’m glad you had that clarity now. I had a disorder and actually got better when I was there. I was eating, not eating the low-fat, icky stuff and I actually lost weight. You’re walking. You’re practicing yoga and you’re also not eating anything processed. Even their desserts and pastries you’re eating aren’t processed. They’re made with real ingredients with no preservatives so it’s all good for your body.
I agree with everything you said! I am making the switch back to real butter, full fat dairy products…etc and it feels so goood! (and tastes delicious!) I have been loving your posts from France! You are such an inspiration!
Great post! I admire how Europeans focus on fresh whole foods and not the diet low fat low cal focus in North America. My latest me time is my AM yoga practice.
Courtney you just brought a huge smile to my face. I don’t lie when I say I have enjoyed many Poulain for breakfast. I once bought two bars three times the size of the regulars and didn’t need much help with them. So dark, smooth, and perfectly milky.
I love how France opens our eyes to our deepest food fears and makes us remember the pleasure in food.
I need to take some inspiration from your me-time and get into a yoga class pronto.
Thanks for always making me smile.
I love this post! I have been following all along of course, but this one is so great to read about your “me moments”. Its so important to remember to take care of ourselves and we often push it aside! Your healthy outlook on your changed diet in Paris is just that, HEALTHY! and you are amazing! Keep up the great work. My me moment of the day was taking a 1.5 hour nap after work and pre-dinner tonight, My second was making roasted chickpeas in nutmeg, cinnamon and syrup tonight as a side to dinner (something ive heard about and always wanted to try!)
LOVING your paris experiences prob as much as you are, i am a total dork, sorry!
I love your musings on Paris culture and habits. Oh, and the peppers and onions idea sounds *scrumptious*. : )
I wanted to let you know of a giveaway I am having on my site for Glass Dharma straws. They are beautiful glass straws that are so fun in green smoothies, juices, or even just lemon water. Perhaps your readers would be interested?

You mean chocolate isn’t a vegetable? Nah! ;-)
Love chocolate and quinoa. Yum! Not together, though. I imagine that’d be weird. *giggles*
Week 7 already? Wow. Soak up every minute! Can’t believe time is flying by so fast!!
Hugs,
Michele
Hi Courtney!
I just want to say that I love your blog! I found it from Gillian’s link. You’ve inspired me to take up my yoga practice again! Keep the great posts coming – always an inspiration.
Wendy
This was an awesome post, as usual! Your blog is always such a breath of fresh air. Can my “me” moment include reading it!? :)
Have a great day!
Totally agree with your take on Parisian eating! I am all about REAL foods, full-fat and all. The taste is better, you need less to feel satisfied and I think our bodies thank us :).
J’adore Paris and all of their wonderful French eating philosophies. Your dinner sounds amazing yet simple, the way all things should be :) all the best my dear!
It is all about eating as unprocessed as possible…and that goes for full fat too!
BODA lose weight
Your dinner looks amazing! I agree that it’s all about eating unprocessed foods. I read ‘French Women Don’t Get Fat’ and loved it because it explained moderation and how to eat fresh food, rather than things that come out of boxes, full of chemicals and preservatives. I know my body always feels better when I eat as natural as possible!
Something special I do every day is read. I just love curling up with a good book without the TV blaring or people talking around me. Just me, my book, and quiet.

So glad you enjoyed some “me moments”! Those are the key to feeling rejuvenated.
And you paint such a beautiful picture of the Parisian lifestyle. They seem to live so much more well-rounded, and it does show.
I love everything about this post. “Me-moments” are seriously important to me, and I see a huge difference in my demeanor when I haven’t gotten enough of them. Second, I can really relate to the type A-perfectionist – that’s me, haha. It “seems” healthier to take the fat/etc. out of things, but it definitely creeps its way back in in other ways…deprivation just leads to eating more!
Anyway, keep up this amazing attitude, and live it up in Paris!
Total agree about embracing fats, although in my own life they’re the plant based heavy hitters: nuts, coconuts, etc. And olive oil is divine!
What a beautiful and balanced dinner :)
