Just the other day I was frolicking the streets of Paris, wearing nothing but my tights, a rather adorable skirt, and a light jacket and basking in the glory of nearly 50 degree weather.
One week later, and this is what we emerged to see after our class visit to the Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration…
Luckily (luckily?) I was wearing two pairs of pants, three pairs of socks, three jackets and a scarf ![]()
The trek to the museum took us about 50 minutes on the metro from our cozy apartment in the 7th arrondissement, but luckily it was just two stops away from Marche d’Aligre. I strolled the market with a friend for a bit and finally made it home around 1:00pm with quite the appetite, and a ginormous (what? It’s a word…)bag of epinards that I bought for 0.74 euro at the market.
Of course, I couldn’t wait to put that spinach to good use. I have been trying to buy some for the past couple weeks to create one of my favorite go to lunches at home…
Keepin’ it classy with massive handfuls of spinach, two whole eggs, and a broken up Babybel cheese with a side of Food, Gender and Globalization syllabus. Simple food is always the best, isn’t it?
The rest of the day was spent reading for class (we are now learning about the Fifth Republic of France and the Algerian War!), eating yogurt (which by the way is beyond delicious in France…and comes in really cool little containers!),
and practicing a little bit of yoga!
I’ve finally made peace with the fact that my practice is just not going to be what it used to for these months in Paris. Yes, there are several amazing yoga studios here…but I think I’d rather save that money that each class costs and go do something fun, know what I mean? Maybe a special dinner at a restaurant or a trip somewhere? Who knows. Someone told me “You’re mat will always be there, but you won’t always be in Paris.” Wise words, my friend. Wise words. This is a new kind of practice…just being, staying present, and enjoying right where I am.
So today’s practice was short and sweet (like me! Okay, I had to.). After strolling the city (and by strolling I, of course, mean running through the snow in suede boots hoping for the best!) for a couple of hours, I hit the mat for 1/2 an hour for some core work and much needed hip openers. And I’m feelin’ good.
We’re keepin’ it low key tonight – spending time in the kitchen and maybe watching a movie?
I believe in all that has never yet been spoken.
I want to free what waits within me
so that what no one has dared to wish formay for once spring clear
without my contriving. If this is arrogant, God, forgive me,
but this is what I need to say.
May what I do flow from me like a river,
no forcing and no holding back,
the way it is with children. Then in these swelling and ebbing currents,
these deepening tides moving out, returning,
I will sing to you as no one ever has, streaming through widening channels
into the open sea.- Rainer Maria Rilke

Was it difficult find food in France to buy that you knew you would like…or are you super adventurous and like to try whatever? I know there is not a shortage of fab food in Paris, but it seems like it would be tough grocery shopping with unfamiliar brands…
- Hillary [don't miss my giveaway!]
Hilary,
It’s been a mix of both! I’ve tried a LOT of new things – cheeses, fruits, veggies. I’m open to trying everything and ignoring my tendency to lean towards what I know!
HEAB’s a wise one :) Every time I see your photos, I’m reminded of being a kid in France…yaourts aux fruits were definitely a childhood staple! Have you tried marrons-suisses yet? It’s like hazelnut mousse sold in little yogurt pots…so good!
what cute little yogurts! i’ve heard french yogurt is fabulous :) so glad you’re staying warm and making peace that the fact is YOU’RE IN PARIS. hope you have a wonderful day :)
LOVE the little yogurt containers!! :-D
And, yes, the mat will always be there but you’re only in Paris right now – absorb every second while you can!!!
Hugs,
Michele
Very “wise words”! So happy you are enjoying the moment!
Those yogurt containers would be great for some herbs! Ummmm!
Hi Hilary :)
I recently stumbled upon your blog and have loved every minute I have read through it. I feel like we have a ton in common (particularly with respect to a love for good food and a passion for yoga BEYOND the physical aspect). I find your positivity truly refreshing.
I am starting my yoga teacher training this weekend with a short Yin training program (in Ottawa, where I live), and in a month I’ll be heading off to Dharamsala in India to do my 200-hr cert for Hatha/Ashtanga. I am so excited. Back-reading some of your entries on your experience has made me all the more thrilled.
Anyway, I just want to say that it has been a blessing for me to stumble upon your blog. You seem wise and mature for your years, and as the French like to say, “bien dans sa peau” ;)
Well this may have been the cheesiest comment I have ever left on a blog! But hey, it’s a rare and special thing to find a kindred spirit.

Wow, I just realized I called you Hilary and your name is Courtney! Sorry about that! I couldn’t see your name written anywhere and saw Hilary in one of the above posts…oops!
The weather is France sounds just as bipolar as the weather here. It’s sleeting at the moment and should be snowing later today, but they’re predicting highs in the 60s by Sunday. At least it keeps you on your toes.
I totally agree with that comment about only being in Paris once – enjoy it! By the way, I love that spinach dish – it makes me feel like eggs. :-)

Mmmm, spinach. That meal looks like a great way to conquer the cold.
Yes, yes, listen to that wise friend of yours. :)
Lunch looked fabulous. The egg yolks added such a beautiful color, and I am always so amazed by how much the spinach cooks down to almost nothing, and yes, simple is best. Agreed!
Courtney – Good luck navigating your new situation – it’s always hard to find the right balance. My hubby and I went to Paris for our honeymoon in early December. It was amazing. I love seeing your updates and living vicariously through you! If you need any suggestions on yummy veggie places – I have a bunch of research from my planning for our honeymoon. Le Potager du Marais (I did a little write up on my blog about it today) is amazing – very yummy veggies.
