Ask Me Anything

by hungryyogini on February 18, 2010

I’ve jumped on the bandwagon (why lead when you can follow! Kidding, of course.).

What!? All the cool kids are doin’ it.

I’ve already gotten several questions on my Ask Me Anything page, one in which someone asked me about what kind of beauty products I use to wash my face and such. Health is on the outside too, my friends. My morning routine is a little something like this…

First, I wash my face with cold water and some Oatmeal Lavender soap from Vermont Soapworks.

Next, St.Ives Apricot Scrub for a little exfoliating action. I’m mildly addicted to this stuff, and it’s probably not good that I use it on my face every day (sometimes multiple times…eek!) since it’s a bit more harsh, but it makes me feel squeaky clean and fresh!

Lastly…moisturizer. This one is a bit out of the box. I use raw, 100% pure shea butter. I put a tiny pea size amount in the palm of my hand, then rub them together until the shea butter melts and is spreadable, then onto my face it goes. I’ve always reacted terribly to other commercial products and moisturizers – even sensitive skin products and brands you’d think would work like Neutrogena and Aveeno don’t work for me. This has been my best bet so far.

And that’s it! I’ve been doing this same little routine for about a year and haven’t had any skin issues… save for that one time of the month. Ahem, ladies. You know what I’m talkin’ about. The products I use are clean and simple. Have you ever read the back of a bottle of that oh so cool Apple-Pear-Strawberrylicious Lotion…the ingredients list on a lot of lotions and other beauty products is extensive, and the fact that all of that would be absorbed into my skin kind of freaks me out.  So I treat my skin care regime and the outside of my body, just as I would the inside. Clean and simple is best.

What products do you use to wash your face? What are some of your favorite “healthy” beauty products?

Have a question you are itchin’ to have the answer to? Go ahead, ask me anything! Yes…anything! But please, be nice Wink

I’ll post answers to your questions as they come in, and add my responses to some of the more frequently asked questions as well as a permanent link to the Ask Me Anything page to my new FAQ page.

…and GO!

Are there any products that are not available in Paris that you particularly miss?

I just recently bought a big bottle of shea butter lotion, though it includes ingredients other than shea butter itself. Looking forward to trying it since you seem to like it! My main criteria for skin care is that products not contain parabens or preservatives or nasty things like that.

I love the Apricot Scrub. I’ve used it forever. Well, since I was 14 or so. I need to reevaluate my moisturizer. It has too much gunk in it. Where did you find the pure shea butter?

Ooh I like the shea butter idea. Like you, I react really badly to commercial products. I’ve been using coconut oil off and on for a couple months but my derm. freaked out when I told her.

I have had success with Mastey de Paris Moiste…plus it has spf 15

I tried a bunch of different products for the past 9 months or so but I just ordered another tube of the Moiste this a.m. I hope my skin is still okay with it.

I’m interested in where you found your pure shea butter!

I love “ask me anything”! Now I just need people to ask ME anything ;)

Shea butter is a great idea for a moisturizer! My skin is super sensitive too. I use coconut butter as a body moisturizer, and Juice Beauty products for my face. Where do you get your 100% shea butter?

Kristin,
My mom and I order it online – I’m not sure the company, but we usually just look for the best deal on bulk 100% pure shea butter and order it that way. The rest is put in the freezer and we take out chunks when we are ready to use it.

Hi, Love this post! I did a lot of research a few months ago into clean natural cosmetics and toiletries. I realized it doesn’t make a lot of sense to put clean natural things in my body but then cover my skin in toxins and chemicals! I haven’t heard of buying shea butter like that though. Do you know if it’s very expensive? I have a few brands of things that I like to buy: Kiss My Face, Yes To Carrots, etc. but I try and buy local products when possible. I buy my soap from the farmers market and I got a great moisturizer there as well. Its called arbordoun’s calendula cream. It’s very affordable and completely plant based. That said, I’d really like to look into getting some pure shea butter! I’m addicted to my exfoliant, as well, which is from Aveda, but I’ve heard you can make your own exfoliant/toner/moisturizer at home by mixing together a little olive oil, granulated sugar and lemon juice. Do you have a favorite brand of natural cosmetics? Sometimes those are a lot harder to find- especially mascara!

Katie,
Local seems like a great idea! I’m going to need to check that out when I return to the US. As far as cosmetics – I use mineral make up but haven’t done too much other research into natural cosmetics. That’s the next step ;) Let me know if you find some good stuff!
