I thought I’d show you what I like to keep on hand to keep my pantry. Even in Paris, I find myself gravitating towards the same basic staples that I’ve been eating for years.
I’m a simple girl, really. Nothin’ too fancy in my pantry, just lots of healthy food that I really enjoy eating. That’s the key
I like to think of the following as the healthy building blocks of how I eat and what I cook. Yes, I play around with my food and sometimes I’ll cook with an ingredient that inspires me, but this is what you’ll find in my kitchen without fail.
Let’s start with the basics. Fruits and veggies.
Apples. Seriously, these are my favorite food in the whole world. I eat them year round, despite my love of fresh, seasonal produce. I think I’ve eaten one (or two sometimes!) every day since I was a youngin’.

I love fruit, especially raspberries when they’re in season and citrus like oranges and grapefruit, but try not too eat more than 1 or 2 servings a day because of the sugar. Yes, they’re natural, but still…too much sugar is too much sugar. And because sometimes I’d rather have my daily sugars come from something like ohh, say, chocolate – which is, by the way, another pantry staple.
I always stock up on fresh veggies. I’m fortunate enough to have tons of local markets at my disposal in Paris and am getting terribly spoiled. These markets are hard to come by back in Tampa, but I certainly do love buying my produce like this. My favorite veggies are broccoli, spinach and lately red bell peppers. They are delicious stir-fried with onion until caramelized. Nom nom.

My main protein staples are chicken, eggs, and seafood like shrimp and salmon. Lately I can’t resist the rotisserie chickens you can buy at the markets.
I usually pull most of the meat off after I buy it and store it in the fridge to use in things like soup, a quick week-night stir-fry, or on salads.
I also can’t get enough eggs – hard boiled, fried, scrambled, in an omelette. Mmm. Eggs. Love.
I’m not too into red meat, but that’s just me. I’ll have it occasionally, but I don’t usually crave it. I also keep simple things like canned beans in stock back home for quick protein on salads or in soups.
Cooking oils and fats. Lately, butter. Ooooh, French butter, how I love you. I also like to cook with extra virgin olive oil, canola oil, ghee (clarified butter), and coconut oil.
And my pantry would be naked without almond butter. Purée amandes? Yes, please!
I don’t respond well to wheat, so I try to keep lots of gluten free grains around. You can usually find quinoa, oats (these don’t happen to be gluten free, but at home we buy Bob’s Red Mill GF oats often), and Mary’s GF Cracker’s in my cupboard.

We usually have ground flax seed in the fridge too, as well as chia seeds. Love those little guys.
Dairy. I love me some yogurt – no fat free please, thanks! Life’s too short to eat fat free yogurt and milk. Living in Paris has taught me to embrace full fat dairy. But if that scares you, at least go with the 2%. Your body and taste buds will thank you.
I love the natural yogurts here, but back home I’m all over Fage Greek yogurt. Mmm.
Speaking of dairy, I love cheese. There’s always cheese in the fridge – lots of really sharp cheddar cheese (the sharper the better!), feta, blue, manchego, brie…oh geez. This list could go on forever. Lately I’ve been all over Boursin. Don’t know why, as I’m in the land of cheese and dairy and could have tons of fancy gourmet cheeses at my disposal, but Boursin has been callin’ my name.
I like to flavor my food with fresh herbs and spices, especially fresh basil in the summer, parsley and cilantro. Back home I have a little herb garden which makes it quick, easy and inexpensive to have fresh herbs, but luckily they are really inexpensive at the farmer’s markets here.

And we always have cinnamon, crushed red bell pepper, sea salt, and black pepper on hand to name a few. Those are my very favorite spices, and the ones I reach for the most. I also keep things like honey, turbinado sugar and agave nectar on hand for coffee and such.
And there you have it. These are the basics of my healthy pantry and what I like to use as the base of what I eat. Mostly fruits and veggies, basic healthy grains, meats and dairy products – these are the things that make me feel the most satisfied and healthy. Yep, I’m a simple gal.
I’ll leave you with one of my favorite food related quotes. I like to think of this when I’m deciding what to eat (Although, we all know I have a soft spot for a certain non-dairy creamer, which by the way I haven’t had in my time abroad. Just whole milk and cream for this coffee lovin’ lady).
“Eat food. Though in our current state of confusion, this is much easier said than done. So try this: Don’t eat anything your great-great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. …There are a great many foodlike items in the supermarket your ancestors wouldn’t recognize as food (Go-Gurt? Breakfast-cereal bars? Nondairy creamer?); stay away from these.”
-Michael Pollan

I like that michael pollan quote..and I love all of your pantry staples! Especially butter and darkchocolate ;) I LOVE to cook with coconut oil. I just started and learned that it is great for thyroid health (which I need!)
But I do eat alot of non fat greek yogurt…it’s really the only kind we can get here! So I have no idea how it tastes differently then full fat greek yogurt! I know I love that it has low sugar and high protein though :):)
Keep on keeping on and enjoying Paris!
those staples are AWESOME!!!!!! i wish i could find a good 2% yogurt somewhere locally…i know there’s gotta be something, but i just haven’t found it yet :)
I love that quote by Michael Pollan, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
I am simple as well! I like preparing extravagant meals for others, but I like to rely on simple, fresh food when I’m on my own. Much like you, I am not a big fan of red meat and much prefer chicken, fish, beans and whole grains for my protein. Quinoa and brown rice are always in my pantry, as are an array of spices, I always have fresh produce on hand, almond milk, oats or oat bran, nut butters, eggs and goat cheese! Fresh, simple and delicious =D

This is a great post, dear. Love all the simple, fresh foods!
My kitchen staples? Avocado, Banana, Dark Chocolate, Greek Yogurt, Greens of some sort, Oats, Nut Butter, [Butter]… =]
Love the staples, and I’m with you on the apples for sure ;-)
I’m definitely with you on all of those staples!
You’ve seen my pantry… It’s completely full of nothing useful… Mostly chocolate, nuts, raisins, sometimes chocolate covered nuts and raisins! ;)
I really love that great-great-grandmother rule. It makes a lot of sense. My biggest staples are bread, fresh fruits and veggies, eggs, and milk. I try to keep it simple too.
Love the peek inside your pantry! Recently I read an article in the New York Times food section about food and yoga:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/27/dining/27yoga.html
Have you ever found that your yoga practice influences your diet? Have you ever felt pressure through your yoga to eat a certain way? I find the subject interesting, and would love to hear your take on it!
Me and your pantry would get along just fine. :)
And so happy to know you found almond butter in Paris. I keep meaning to ask you if they sell it there. If not, I would have been tempted to ship you some!
Have a good week my friend.
I really love all your pantry staples. Everyone should follow these rules. I too live in Florida and wish we had outdoor markets to shop for fresh fruit and veggies. I love the quote too from Michael Pollen. Thanks for sharing your food staples.
Great post! Your pictures are incredible. Amazing and beautiful! You could sell some of your photos as prints. I love the Michael Pollan quote, I want to start reading some of his books!
Some of my staples: nut butters, whole wheat bread, spinach, herbs(when the weather is better and doesn’t kill our herb garden!), carrots, onions, sweet potatoes, preserves, cheese(I’m with you on the cheese), and organic dairy.
Please enjoy full fat cream, butter, yogurt for us here drooling at the thought of french dairy!! One day I shall try it, one day! :)
Michael Pollen does say it best. I find that I have been gravitating towards a lot of fresh, whole food lately. I even make our “granola bars” (sans granola) by scratch now, eliminating the need to buy the old stand-bys that were usually laden with fats and hydrogenated oils. Blech.
I usually buy lower fat yogurts and lower fat cheese, but I do indulge once in a while (you really can’t go wrong with a really sharp cheddar!). I always have almond milk on hand because my stomach doesn’t seem to like milk all that much (though it tolerates cheese and yogurt).
We always have beans, diced tomatoes, and simple canned fruits and vegetables in the cupboard for emergencies. I usually stick to turkey, chicken, fish, and eggs for my protein, whereas my husband also likes pork and red meat (both of which I try to rarely eat). I would love to buy the organic meats, but it’s just so expensive and I do have a budget when it comes time to grocery shop.
You’re lucky that you have access to fresh herbs! I grow them in the summer and absolutely love having them. :-) As for breads, I’ve been buying a whole wheat bread and making a few multigrain loaves when I have time. I consider this to be a success since my husband used to like white-everything. It was insane. Now I only buy whole wheat pastas, breads, and even crackers. If he wants something else, he can get it! LOL!
Lastly, we buy a LOT of produce. I like to imagine that I’m turning slightly vegan, though I know I never will. I’ve grown to love veggies any which way – roasted, steamed, stir fried, etc. I’m trying to make them the main part of my meal, complimented by a protein.
I don’t diet – I just try to eat well. :-)
Oh, and I have treats – plenty of dark chocolate (and the milkier salt chocolate – my second love), dried fruit (especially apricots!), and nuts.
I slip up often and buy bad things, but those are getting to be fewer and fewer, which is great. I find my body craves goodness and that’s what I want to give it!
Sorry for the huge comment!

HAHAAH the Mary’s CRACK is my fave!!!! I’ve been having it with little cheese slices lately and its divineee :)
Also loving on the apples. I’ve been having 1-2 a day since I was a little girl too! Pink ladies are the BEST. And yet my sorority house neglects to stock them!! Soooo when at school–i’m a red delicious and granny smith type of girl. Le sigh! ;)
When i’m home…i always have to have the kitchen stocked with greek yogurt, nut butters, some type of yummy chips/crackers, oatmeal, fruit, trail mix, hummus, veggies, veggie burgers, tomato sauce, almond/soy milk, cereal, wraps and english muffins :)
