Blog and Basics

What will I find on your blog? What’s it about?

Well, it depends! This is a bit of a creative space for me – you’ll find recipes, healthy food tips, thoughts from my yoga practice, and many of my other silly life moments. I sometimes describe my blog as a “my life in food” space. Lots of food pictures, and me just chattin’ away

What kind of camera do you use?

Most of my pictures are taken with a Canon 50D, graciously handed down to me from my dad. I use both a 50mm 1.8 lens, and an 18-135mm lens. Some photos are taken with my Canon Powershot SD880. Love that little guy, too.

What’s with the gluten-free thing?

Gluten and I just don’t get along. I am by no means a celiac, but it just doesn’t make me feel good. Thing upset tummy, pimply face, lethargic and sluggish. Yep, that’s me and gluten in a nut shell. I try to avoid it at all cost so many of my recipes (after May 2009) are gluten free.

You mentioned something about hypothyroidism. What’s the deal with that?

In the Summer of 2009, after months of chronic fatigue, hair loss, sleepless nights and other symptoms, I discovered that my T3/T4 hormone levels were low and am on a low dose of synthroid. It runs in my family and I’m fortunate to have caught it in the early stages. I’m all about prevention and I think nutrition is key – you’ll find lots of recipes here using healthy ingredients like fruits and veggies, and a lot of healthy fats that support the thyroid like coconut oil and avocado.

Do you count calories?

I don’t count calories. Used to be a slave to those stupid numbers. I could probably tell you the calorie count for just about any food out there, but I’ve worked really hard to get rid of those voices when I’m making my own food choices. I also don’t weigh myself. In fact, I’ve asked my family to hide the scale from me. I don’t think they got it at first, but  they obliged and I think it’s made such a huge difference for me. I’m not a number, and you aren’t either.

What is your major? When do you graduate? And what do you want to do after?

I’m a Finance major and will graduate in December of 2010. I was scheduled to graduate in May of 2010 but instead took the opportunity to live in Paris for five months.  Not a  bad trade off! I have no idea what I want to do after college…I just know that I don’t want to sit at a desk! I’m fairly certain I’m going to head to culinary school at the Natural Gourmet Institute in 2011. I’m interested in being a personal chef geared toward special diets (mostly gluten-free) and would also love to be teaching yoga. I’d love to do something with photography too. We shall see!

Are you a certified yoga instructor? Who did you do your training with?

Yes, I am a 200 hour Registered Yoga Teacher. I did my training through the Asheville Yoga Center and Yoga Alliance with Stephanie Keach and Shala Worsley from January-August of 2009. My home yoga studio (Yogani Studios) offered the program and the teachers came down to Tampa from Asheville for each of the sessions.

How long have you been practicing yoga? And how long did you practice before you started teacher training?

I started practicing in early 2008, and decided to do teacher training almost a year later. I was a little nervous about going through training since I was still fairly new to the practice, but I think it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Everything with the teacher training fell into place. I had to commute back and forth from school to get to the sessions every few weekends and it worked perfectly into my schedule. It just seemed like the right time to do it. I learned so much and met some amazing people that to this day are very close friends.

What is your favorite kind of yoga?

I love Ashtanga and Power and Vinyasa. Oooh, and then there’s Yin. Oh heck, I love it all. I do not, however, love Bikram yoga. It’s just not for me. Plus, I live in Florida…it’s hot enough already! I do hope to one day train with Shiva Rea – I love her style. It’s very fluid and almost dance like. Ooh, trance dance. Love that too. Seriously, I can’t choose!

What yoga mat do you use?

I couldn’t live without my Manduka Black Mat. Love.

What yoga videos would you recommend to a newbie?

Hmmm. Shiva Rea has great videos out, and there’s also several great videos on YogaVibes. They have tons of yoga videos from teachers all over the U.S., plus you get to watch the teacher in a live class which is great for beginners. I’m not too into yoga videos though…never have been. I don’t like to watch the screen and try to practice at the same time. But that’s just m
